Litt om bistand og hekser

På nettsidene til dagbladet stod det i går en sak om at Norge hjelper Malawi med å bekjempe heksekunst. Saken presenterer (svært kort) at den norske ambassaden gir ca 3 millioner kroner til en organisasjon her i Malawi, som heter Association for Secular Humanism. Pengene skal brukes til å bekjempe problemer knyttet til det faktum at mange fortsatt tror på trolldom og hekseri. 

Dette er et samfunnsproblem som underkommuniseres og som det er viktig å gjøre noe med. Det hender faktisk at mennesker (særlig kvinner) blir beskyldt for hekseri, med vold, trusler og det som verre er som konsekvenser. Fritanke.no har en litt mer grundig artikkel om temaet på sine nettsider. 

I går leste jeg også en kronikk om bistand i den malawiske avisen "The Nation", som het "Can we suddenly get rid of them?", som absolutt er verdt å lese for de som er interesserte i et afrikansk (malawisk) syn på bistand generelt. 

Jeg har ikke tenkt til å komme med noen samfunnsanalyse av verken troen på hekseri eller bistandens innvirkning på det malawiske samfunn her, til det har jeg verken utdannelse, kunnskap eller erfaring nok. Jeg ville bare dele disse sakene med dere, så dere kan gjøre dere opp deres egne tanker om hva bistand bør være og hvordan den bør gjennomføres.

ON WITCHES AND DEVELOPING AID

Yesterday, on the website of the Norwegian newspaper "Dagbladet", one could read that Norway helps Malawi to combat witchcraft. The article describes (very short) that the Norwegian Embassy donates approximately 3 million Norwegian kroner (500 000 - 600 000 USD) to an organization here in Malawi, which fights sorcery and witchcraft.

The belief in witchcraft is a social problem which is under communicated, and that it is important to address. There is a real problem that people (especially women) are accused of witchcraft, with violence, threats and worse as consequences. The Norwegian website "Fritanke.no" has a more thorough article on the subject on its website.

Yesterday I read a feature article on aid in the Malawian newspaper "The Nation", called "Can we suddenly get rid of them?". The text is certainly worth reading for those interested in an African (Malawian) view of developing aid.

I'm not going to come up with any social analysis of the impact of neither witchcraft nor aid on the Malawian society here, since I do not have the education, the knowledge or the experience to do this. 

I just wanted to share this with you, so that, hopefully, you can make up your own minds about how and what developing aid should be.
